Course Outline

Materials needed: A4 sketchbook, pencil 2B, eraser, waterproof fine liner pens, watercolour /
gauche (black, white, red, blue, yellow), brushes round.

Warm-Up

Gesture sketches; exploring realistic, loose and expressive portrait styles.

Body Proportions

Basic head and body proportions; foreshortening arms, legs and torsos.

Composition

Placing figures in scenes; using light direction and contrast to guide the eye.

Topic-Focused Practice I

Facial features (eyes, noses, mouths), hair, expressions.

Topic-Focused Practice II

Hands, feet, clothing folds, capturing movement.

Final
Project

A figure or portrait study with line and watercolour.

watercolours (recommend Windsor & Newton 12 colour pan), round brush no. 8.
